Thuringian Forest
The Thuringian Forest is also aptly called Germany's green heartland. This mountain range is located along the southern border of the German state of Thuringia, in the former GDR. The most famous hiking trail of Germany, the Rennsteig, runs over the ridge of the mountains. The entire region, being Germany's largerst contiguous forested area, is a true paradise for nature lovers and active holidaymakers. The large differences in altitude have created a rich biodiversity. Special flora and fauna, such as wild orchids, black stork and imperial cloak, can still be found here. To the north, the Thuringian Forest is steep and densely forested. The forests, which also adorn the mountain ridge, open up to the south. The landscape is sloping and varied with sunny meadows and breathtaking views.
Each season has its own charm: flowering mountain meadows in spring, emerald forests in summer, beautiful colours in autumn and magical snow landscapes in winter.
